There are many possible reasons an upload might be getting slowed down. When uploading several gigabytes of data, the entire pipeline must be working properly in order to get your data to the cloud servers as rapidly as possible. Here are some important things to check to find the cause.

  • Verify that you are not uploading anything else concurrently

    1. On Windows you can use Resource Monitor to see network activity on your computer

    2. On Mac, the equivalent is the Activity Monitor

  • Verify that your network is not saturated with another large upload

  • Verify that you are not performing computationally intensive tasks (you can tell if your computer’s fan is working hard) that might slow your computer's performance.

  • Try using an ethernet cable if speeds are lower than expected.

  • Did you make a large upload recently? In some cases internet services providers (ISP) can limit your total data transfer over a given period of time. They call this data throttling and each ISP can have differing rules.

  • Check your internet upload speed. Anything below 1 to 2 Mbps is abnormally low. You can check your upload speed with these sites:

  • If speeds are lower than expected, you might need to restart your WiFi router and modem
